Big Bear NCS race replaced by Utah venue
01.29.05 (3:36 am)   [edit]

Snow Summit Resort in Big Bear Lake, California will not be hosting gravity racing or riding this year. NORBA national mountain bike series event was likely to be held on May 13-15 at Big bear which is now shifted to Brian Head, Utah and now it will happen on July 29-31. This is due to the ban on downhill bikes from slopes, due to a lawsuit filed by a rider who was badly injured in June 2003.

The biggest bike mountain-bike series will occur for the first time at southwestern Utah at Brian Head Resort. Marathon, mountain cross, downhill and super D, cross-country, short track will all be contested at the new venue. Brian Head is a bit tough to reach. The nearest airport is Las Vegas which is 3 hours away. Salt Lake city is a 4 hours drive and a smaller airport at St. George, Utah is only 90 minutes drive.

Big Bear the longest running venue on the national circuit might have seen its last race.

Staying at resorts around the shores of Big Bear Lake
01.02.05 (10:20 pm)   [edit]
Welcome to the Big Bear hotels introduction.

If you are looking something for something earthy in Big Bear, Pine Knot Guest Ranch will please you. It is an ideal family getaway resort. Cabins are excellently maintained. The grounds have a lot of grass with a swing and benches to sit on. You can watch squirrels, llamas, bunnies etc. It has a convenient location being quite close to the village. Kitchens are stuffed with essential supplies. The jacuzzi is a standout. All rooms have fire places. Finally, the management is very friendly. Great place to stay.

If you have different plans and are keen to stay near the slopes, go to Marina Riviera Lake Resort. Take room facing the lake if possible for a great view. High speed internet access is provided at a nominal charge. Also close by are the bars in the village. There is a heated jacuzzi too.

Looking for cabins, check out Grey Squirrel. The rooms have a gas fireplace, comfortable couches with a heater and a dining table. This place also has a playground for kids. Staff is helpful. The minus point is that it is right on the highway, so you have to put up with the noise. Slopes are also quite far way. But you can’t get it all? Can you?

Big Bear Lake, California is a resort for all seasons
01.02.05 (8:18 pm)   [edit]

Big Bear is one of the few places in the United States where you can witness four seasons in a year!

Big Bear is the place for all seasons (literally!). It has three mountain resorts, lakes with fresh water, forests dotted by oak and pine trees and rich flora and fauna. So tourists come here for different reasons during different seasons. In winter, skiing and snowboarding facilities are provided at the mountain resorts. Family sledding is also offered down the mountains.

Spring is the season when nature showers all its goodies on Big Bear. There is greenery all round with blooming flowers. Watch those lovely meadows on the mountains.

Summer is the time when one can explore the wide open spaces and participate in numerous outdoor activities available there. Hiking to the top of the famous Castle Rock is a hit among tourists. Other activities like boating and fishing during daytime and camping out during night times at the specially designed campsites are sought after by tourists apart from chair lifting and mountain biking.

In the autumn season, Big Bear hosts Oktoberfest, the most famous festival here. Games and competition are held as part of these festivities.

Freshwater lake resort in Big Bear

Yuhaviat is the original name of what is now known as Big Bear. Yuhaviat is Serrano Indian for ‘pine place’.

In 1845, when Benjamin Davis Wilson happened to pass by the Yuhaviat Valley to chase away Indians, they found this area inhabited with lot of bears. Hence it was named Big Bear. However the bears are getting extinct in this mountain resort located 100 miles to the northeast of Los Angeles in the heart of San Bernardino National Forest.

This lake area lies at between 6,750 to 9,000 feet above sea level. Excepting for two months, it is sunny throughout for the remainder time. The average summer temperature averages 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the daytime and 45 degrees at nights. During winter, temperatures plummet to an average of 40 degrees during the day and 25-30 during nighttime.

Coming to the lake, it is seven miles long with an average width of 0.5 miles. The shoreline is 22 miles long. Around the lake, lot of recreational activities such as fishing, water skiing, sailing, swimming boating and sunbathing etc. are offered. Away from the lake, you have activities like mountain biking, horseback riding, winter sports, hiking and so forth.
